UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the UK

Did you know there are 962 UNESCO World Heritage Sites? And 28 of them are located in the UK?
If you’ve covered a decent amount of the Great British Isles in your holiday travels you’ve probably visited a few. But in case you haven’t, these fantastic historical beauties are sitting pretty and just waiting to be admired.

Here are just two of our favourites for now.

Stonehenge in Wiltshire
This World Heritage Site has attracted tourists from far and wide for decades. It’s often featured in documentaries that hope to expose its secrets. The latest crusader, Professor Mike Parker Pearson recently featured in a Channel 4 documentary called Secrets of the Stonehenge Skeletons. Along with his team he was granted permission to analyse ancient bones once buried under the prehistoric stones. The documentary made for compelling viewing and put a new perspective on the relevance of Stonehenge. We’re not going to reveal those secrets here, so you’ll have to watch the TV programme or visit this great Site to learn more!

Opening times: 9.30am to 6pm from now until 31st May. 9.30am to 7pm from 1st June until 31st August. See the English Heritage website for opening times later in the year.

Admission: prices range from £8 for adults, £7.20 for students and adults over 60 years old and £4.80 for children aged 5-15. Family tickets cost £20.80 (2 adults and 3 children).

Ironbridge in Shropshire
This World Heritage Site is still celebrating the well deserved accolade of 2012’s most highly recommended UNESCO World Heritage Site in the UK by TripAdvisor users. It also ranked second in the World’s Most Recommended Sites too. Telford and Wrekin’s Ironbridge Gorge is viewed as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. Here you’ll find the world’s first cast iron bridge built in 1779 stretching across the River Severn, along with ten museums and quaint shops offering souvenirs and locally produced snacks. It’s a beautiful location to stop for a spot of lunch and take in the amazing views.
